Altolandon - Mil Historias - Bobal - 2017

• Altolandon - Mil Historias - Bobal - 2017

Deep cherry red colour with violet reflections. The nose is intense with aromas of ripe red seasonal fruit, subtle hints of violets, rosemary and a touch of black pepper. This Bobal shows pronounced power, lively fruit, freshness and soft, ripe tannins.

Bobal is an ancient grape variety from the dry plains inland from Valencia, which grows on gnarled bush vines, similar to the Shiraz from Barossa. The yields are low and the concentration epic. This supple wine is dark and dense, but wonderfully juicy, with a hint of coconut from the oak barrels. A forgotten corner of the wine world, but a real bargain.

Bobal is the second most widely grown red grape variety in Spain, but is far less well known to most wine lovers than the most widely grown grape variety, Tempranillo. This inexpensive, non-dried Bobal is grown at high altitude on north and south-facing slopes on the Altolandon estate, 90 minutes north of Valencia. It is deep in colour and has some of the rusticity associated with this grape variety, with attractive, slightly spicy blueberry and blackberry fruit. Quite simple, with slightly grippy tannins and good acidity - try it with lamb chops.
Tip: Enjoy this red wine slightly chilled.
